St Kitts and Nevis signs historic Maritime Agreement with Netherlands

St Kitts and Nevis: Dr Denzil Douglas, Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with his excellency Cornelis W. Hersbach, who is newly appointed Ambassador of the Netherlands. The historic Maritime Border Agreement was signed between the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis and the Netherlands.

Notably, this agreement between the two nations will foster socio-cultural relationships and enhance the economic sectors of both the nations.

Since 2014, the maritime zones have been involved in the negotiation between the two nations. This agreement will lead to the establishment of even handed demarcation of all maritime zones.

Dr Denzil Douglas added that this agreement will enhance the trade relations between the two nations. It will also increase food production trade within the fisheries sector. The agreement will serve as a partnership between St Kitts and Nevis and the European states.

Tivana Wharton, the Minister of Tourism, highlighted the key roles of the agreement. Furthermore, she stated that it is pivotal for the development of small developing islands like St Kitts and Nevis to enter into a maritime borders partnership that will bring sustainability to small developing island states.

During the meeting, emphasis was laid on the role of renewable energy sources, including solar and hydro energy. The discussions included the role of renewable energy in reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.

The another aspect of the discussion was the practices to be taken out to control Solid Waste Management. The two nations have focused intensely on the management of solid waste which is seen as an important aspect of environmental efforts in today’s time.

Additionally, the Dutch Ambassador intimidated his interest and put forward his ideas and interests to carry out the collaboration in a clearer way. The collaboration between the two nations would allow St Kitts and Nevis to flourish its Sustainable Island State agenda.

The Maritime Agreement between the federal government of St Kitts and Nevis and the Netherlands will strengthen the relationships between the two nations.
