Jamaica: Everald Warmington resigns from the Cabinet

Everald Warmington has resigned as Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation in Jamaica, in the wake of his comments that he would starve an elected People’s National Party councillor of public funds.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness says he met with Warmington today and at the end of the meeting he received Warmington’s resignation.

“I thanked him for his service in that capacity and Minister Warmington expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve,” Holness says.

Speaking to JLP supporters following Monday’s Local Government Elections, Warmington had stated: “I’m the minister of works, I’m the member of parliament, no PNP councillor going spend my money.”

At the same time, Warmington said the JLP’s losing candidate, Lloyd Grant “might not be councillor but he will spend every dime.”

Warmington on Wednesday issued a statement saying that his comments have been “misunderstood”.

He also said he was withdrawing the statements and apologised to Jamaicans.

The Opposition PNP had called for Warmington to be fired from the Cabinet.
