Residents of Montserrat are being strongly advised to stay vigilant as extreme heat conditions have gripped the island for over a week now. The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has issued a heat wave warning not only for Montserrat but also for the other northern Leeward Islands.

With temperatures soaring up to 31.7°C, residents are urged to take necessary precautions to withstand the scorching weather. The forecast indicates low rainfall and persistently high temperatures for the foreseeable future, prompting authorities to issue a heatwave advisory to keep the populace informed.

Defined as two or more consecutive days with temperatures reaching 31.7°C or higher, the heatwave advisory underscores the severity of the situation. Meteorologist Dale Destin highlights the combination of high temperatures, elevated humidity, and gentle breezes as factors contributing to these extreme conditions, which pose significant risks to public health and safety.

In response, citizens are encouraged to adopt various coping strategies, including avoiding confined spaces, staying well-hydrated, dressing appropriately, and ensuring the well-being of vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and those with chronic health conditions.

Recognising the symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as dizziness, fainting, nausea, rapid heartbeat, or extreme thirst, the Met Office emphasizes the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if these signs persist or worsen.

Citing a 2021 study supported by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Met Office underscores the grave consequences of heatwaves, including increased mortality rates, particularly among outdoor workers. Conducted by Public Health Specialist Dr. Lindonna Telesford, the study laid the groundwork for heat health studies in the Caribbean, contributing to initiatives aimed at enhancing national health adaptation plans, such as the one in Grenada.
