Former Bahamas Deputy Speaker Donald Saunders fatally shot in robbery

The Bahamas is grappling with the loss of Donald Saunders, a former Member of Parliament, who tragically became the country’s 35th murder victim.

Saunders, who had a distinguished career as an attorney before venturing into politics, served the Tall Pines constituency as its MP and held the position of Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly from 2017 until 2021.

An attack in Gambier Heights

The incident occurred on Wednesday, around 9:15 pm, in Gambier Heights, in western New Providence.

Saunders was among the patrons outside a club when two masked gunmen emerged, creating a scene of panic and chaos.

Reports are that the assailants, wielding firearms, demanded cash from the patrons, who scattered in various directions in an attempt to escape the peril.

It was further reported that Saunders was found lifeless, lying face down.

Initial investigations suggest that Saunders was not the specific target.

A call for community assistance

Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander has called to the residents of Gambier Heights, a community known for its close-knit and peaceful nature, to underscore the importance of community cooperation in solving this tragic case.
