Bahamian Devynne Charlton has shattered the world indoor 60 metre hurdles record.

Charlton,28, clocked a stunning 7.67 seconds at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting in New York on Sunday to become the fastest woman in 60m sprint history.

Her time takes 0.01s off the previous world record set by Sweden’s Susanna Kallur exactly 16 years and one day ago.

Charlton, the Commonwealth Games and World Indoor Championship silver medallist, has been in top form since opening her season last month. She clocked an impressive 7.88s in Louisville, Kentucky and followed up a week later with a 7.75s national record.

Following the race, she told World Athletics: “I heard the announcer say something that sounded like ‘world record’, but it didn’t hit me until I saw my name and time on the clock.”

“When I saw that clock, I felt relief. When you set a goal and work towards it all year, and then you achieve it, it makes you feel you’re on top of the world.”

Charlton’s fast time will undergo ratification before it is placed on the record books.
