Rankin bids farewell to BVI: Reflects on challenges & hope for reforms

BVI Governor John Rankin

Governor John James Rankin said farewell to the British Virgin Islands today.

Rankin demitted office following a special ceremony at Government House.

Rankin said being appointed to replace then-Governor Augustus Jaspert in January 2021 was a huge privilege as he took over when the territory faced several challenges including recovery from devastation caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I have been proud to call these islands home,” Rankin said while thanking Virgin Islanders for welcoming him into the community.

He, however, admitted that his time at the helm was not without challenges as a Commission of Inquiry into the territory’s governance was torn on the side of many people.

Rankin stated that he has had to make several difficult decisions, but they were all made with the best interest of islanders in mind.

Rankin said he knows Virgin Islanders are hungry for change and want what is best for the territory.

“It is my hope and belief that the reforms which have been made and the reforms still to come will make the BVI a better place for all,” the governor said.

With his last hours in power, Rankin sought to mend his relationship with Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley, calling him a friend and someone who had his “enduring respect.”

Wheatley and other regional leaders criticised Rankin’s recent moves to increase the governor’s powers.

Wheatley said Rankin’s power grab is strategically planned to align with the trial of former premier Andrew Fahie, which is set to get underway shortly in the United States.

Rankin, 66, is retiring from public service.

He is a career diplomat and public servant and has served the United Kingdom in several capacities including as Governor of Bermuda and High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.

Daniel Pruce is replacing Rankin.

The governor-designate has a long career of diplomatic and public service.

He served as the UK’s Ambassador to the Philippines and was the interim Director of Communication at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
