Montserrat Utility Limited Addresses Recent Power Outages with Commissioning of New Generator

Over the past three weeks, the island has experienced intermittent power outages, including St. Patrick’s week, due to various issues with the island’s generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure. The series of events unfolded as a result of faults occurring in existing generators and a transformer.

The initial disruption occurred with the periodic tripping out of Generator #3, subsequent issues led to the reliance on older, smaller generators.

Despite these challenges, we are pleased to announce that the commissioning of the New Generator #8, procured last year, is now complete and fully operational as of March 27th, 2024.

The commissioning of the new Generator is expected to alleviate most of the challenges experienced with the electricity generation operations and thus bring greater stability to the island’s power supply.

This milestone represents a significant step forward for the Island’s power infrastructure. With Generator #8 now online, we anticipate a more stable and resilient power supply for the island moving forward.

We extend our appreciation to all involved in the commissioning process and to the community for their patience. We express our commitment to continually improving and enhancing Montserrat Island’s energy resilience.
