Montserrat’s Port Development Project has achieved a significant milestone as the first reinforced concrete caissons were lowered into the waters where the future pier will stand.

The transportation of approximately 320 caissons, concrete block structures crucial for the construction, commenced on Tuesday, March 19th.

These caissons serve as essential elements for the forthcoming pier construction, playing a vital role in the development of a 130-meter-long pier and the mooring dolphin.

This week, the Montserrat Port Development Project received joint supervisory oversight from The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and The FCDO United Kingdom Caribbean Infrastructure Partnership Fund (UKCIF) team.

The UK Government is contributing ÂŁ14.4 million in grant funding to support the project through the UK Caribbean Infrastructure Fund (UKCIF), administered by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). Additionally, the Government of Montserrat is providing ÂŁ7 million in counterpart resources, with financial backing from the European Union.

The project is being undertaken by Meridian Construction Company Ltd, with implementing agencies overseeing the project from the Government of Montserrat being the Ministry of Finance and Economic Management and the Ministry of Communications Works, Energy, and Labour.
