Jamaica: Petrojam assessing damage from refinery fire

Following a fire that erupted on Tuesday evening at its Marcus Garvey Drive location in Kingston, Jamaica, the state-owned petroleum refinery, Petrojam, is now focused on evaluating the damage incurred during the incident.

The fire, which began after 7 pm, impacted a specific section of its operations. Fortunately, Petrojam confirmed that there were no reported injuries.

In response to the situation, Petrojam decided to temporarily shut down the affected plant to ensure the safety of its personnel and prevent further escalation, as stated late Tuesday.

Addressing potential concerns arising from the incident, Petrojam sought to reassure customers and stakeholders through an early morning update on Wednesday. Petrojam’s General Manager, Telroy Morgan, emphasized that both loading facilities in Kingston and Montego Bay resumed operations during standard business hours.

Morgan stated, “At Petrojam, we maintain a substantial reserve of products to ensure uninterrupted supply to the country in any emergency situation.” He reiterated the commitment to preventing fuel shortages in Jamaica and assured that ample supplies are in place.

Expressing gratitude for the swift response and effective containment of the fire by the Jamaica Fire Brigade and emergency crews on Tuesday evening, Petrojam pledged to provide timely updates as the investigation and damage assessment progress.

As Jamaica’s sole petroleum refinery, Petrojam, owned by the Government of Jamaica, plays a crucial role in supplying a comprehensive range of domestic, transportation, and industrial petroleum products.
