Grenada Hosts Caribbean Sustainable Tourism Conference 2024

The Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development, also known as the Sustainable Tourism Conference (STC), commenced on Monday at the Radisson Resort in Grenada. This event serves as a platform for regional and international experts to convene and discuss the challenges, opportunities, and best practices in Caribbean tourism.

With over 50 speakers scheduled over two days, the conference aims to spotlight the essential pillars crucial for fostering a sustainable legacy in Caribbean tourism. Under the theme “The 5 Ps for a Legacy of Caribbean Tourism Sustainability: People, Planet, Prosperity, Purpose & Partnership,” discussions will delve into transformative and regenerative approaches to tourism development.

Notable speakers at the opening ceremony included Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada, Minister of Tourism Adrian Thomas, and industry leaders such as Dona Regis Prosper from the Caribbean Tourism Organization and Petra Roach from the Grenada Tourism Authority. Adam Stewart, Executive Chairman of Sandals Resorts, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of sustainable tourism for the entire Caribbean region.

Minister Adrian A Thomas reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting equity in the tourism sector, particularly through community-led sustainable tourism initiatives. He highlighted the need to address challenges such as climate change, over-tourism, and transportation issues to support industry growth.

The conference features three days of interactive engagements focusing on promoting a transformative and sustainable legacy in Caribbean tourism. Minister Thomas emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage and proper management to maintain the region’s charm as a tourist destination.

Described as the premier event for high-level networking and regional dialogue on sustainable tourism development in the Caribbean, the STC conference also brings together regional and international media to spotlight sustainable tourism initiatives and inspire governments, businesses, and individuals to prioritize sustainability in tourism developments.

Secretary-General and CEO of the Caribbean Tourism Organization, Dona Regis-Prosper, congratulated Grenada for its exceptional performance as a tourism destination. The STC conference coincides with the 10th anniversary of the launch of the ‘Pure Grenada’ brand and Earth Day, further highlighting Grenada’s commitment to sustainable tourism development.
