Mike Espat, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment in Belize, has tragically passed away following a massive heart attack yesterday evening, as confirmed by close sources to his family. The incident occurred on April 22, 2024.

Espat was immediately taken to the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan, where he later succumbed to the heart attack.

A stalwart in Belizean politics, Espat was one of the longest-serving area representatives in the Belizean government. He first secured the Toledo East seat in 1989, was re-elected between 1998 and 2008, and held the position from 2012 until his untimely passing. Throughout his career, Espat also served as Minister of Agriculture, Cooperatives, and various other key sectors, emerging as a steadfast advocate for the Toledo District.

This marks the second loss for the People’s United Party (PUP) in this term, following the passing of Corozal Bay’s David “Dido” Vega due to COVID-19 on the day he was set to be sworn in.
