The Ministry of Health in Anguilla says both the flu and COVID-19 continue to be detected here in Anguilla, with the latest surge being attributable mainly to COVID-19.

A statement was released by the ministry about increased cases of acute respiratory tract infection including COVID-19.

The health ministry says Anguilla and several other Caribbean territories are currently experiencing an increase in cases of acute respiratory infections (ARIs).

It says this increase coincides with the “Respiratory Virus Season” in the Northern Hemisphere. The United States, for example, has been experiencing increased cases of respiratory infections including COVID-19 and the flu.

The health ministry reminds the public that frequent handwashing and the practice of good hygiene remain the best ways to protect oneself and prevent the spread of COVID-19, the flu and other germs. Additionally:

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.

• Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

• Stay at home when you are sick. Parents in particular are asked to refrain from sending sick children to daycare or school before being cleared by a health care provider.

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

• Symptomatic persons, especially those living with vulnerable persons, should consider mask-wearing inside the homes in addition to hygienic precautions.

The Ministry of Health says while they await the arrival of more COVID-19 vaccine, flu vaccine is available at the polyclinics. Those at high risk for severe disease including pregnant women, older persons (aged 65 years or over); persons with chronic disease; persons with weak immune systems; persons who are very overweight, should seriously consider taking the vaccine.
