7 people in the Cayman Islands are seriously injured in gunfire at a soccer game, police say

A shocking incident of gun violence erupted at the Ed Bush Stadium in West Bay on Sunday night, leaving seven people injured as a gunman indiscriminately opened fire during a football match. The incident has raised concerns about the escalating gun violence in the Cayman Islands, prompting an urgent response from law enforcement and government officials.

The shooting occurred around 9pm on Sunday, 25th February, during halftime of a premier league game between Elite and Academy Sports Clubs. According to reports, more than a dozen shots were fired from an area near the changing rooms into the stands, causing chaos and panic among spectators, including children.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, all injured individuals were transported to the hospital in private vehicles, where they were reported to be in stable condition despite sustaining serious injuries. Eyewitnesses described a scene of panic and fear as players and spectators scrambled for safety amidst the gunfire.

Law enforcement responded swiftly, cordoning off the scene and dispatching the firearms response team and police helicopter to patrol the area. However, it was the players who provided immediate medical assistance to the victims, demonstrating remarkable bravery and compassion in the face of danger.

André Ebanks, representing the West Bay South constituency, took to social media to call for calm and prayers for the Cayman Islands, urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS).

As of midnight, no arrests had been made, and an investigation was underway. The RCIPS appealed to the public for information, asking witnesses to contact emergency services or the West Bay Police Station. In response to the shooting, a meeting was held between MPs and RCIPS representatives behind closed doors on Monday afternoon. Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly and senior police officers were expected to hold a press conference to provide updates on the situation.

Premier O’Connor-Connolly expressed deep concern and condemned the violence, emphasizing that such acts would not be tolerated in the Cayman Islands. She commended the efforts of law enforcement, first responders, medical professionals, and bystanders who risked their lives to save others.

Opposition Leader Roy McTaggart expressed solidarity with the government’s efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice and called for calm among the community. Home Affairs Minister Sabrina Turner expressed gratitude to emergency services and medical personnel for their bravery and commitment to public safety.
