3.5 magnitude earthquake strikes near Trindad and Grenada

The seismic activity in the Caribbean region has seen a noticeable rise, as indicated by the seismic monitoring system at the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC). The UWI SRC, has reported a recent earthquake of magnitude 3.5, which occurred on March 3rd, 2024, at 01:29 am local time (05:29 UTC). The epicenter of this earthquake is situated at a latitude of 11.67N and a longitude of 60.65W, with a depth of 10 km.

Given the location of the epicenter, the impact of this earthquake has been felt most strongly in the nearby cities of Scarborough, Tobago, which is approximately 55 km north-northeast (NNE) of the epicenter, and St. George’s, Grenada, approximately 129 km east-southeast (ESE) of the epicenter. Arima, Trinidad and Tobago, about 134 km northeast (NE) of the epicenter, has also experienced the tremors. It is important to note that the distances and directions provided are with respect to the epicenter of the earthquake.

The UWI SRC is urging individuals who have felt this earthquake to provide feedback by visiting their website (https://uwiseismic.com/connect/earthquake-feedback/). This feedback will help in further assessing the impact of the earthquake.

It is essential to emphasize that the preliminary location and magnitude of this earthquake have been determined automatically by computer algorithms. These calculations are subject to potential revisions after being evaluated by the analysts at the UWI SRC. Therefore, continuous monitoring and analysis are being conducted to provide accurate and up-to-date information about seismic activities in the Caribbean region.
