The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) has reported an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter scale near Grenada. The event occurred at 8:52 pm local time on February 16, 2024, and was located at a depth of 10 km.

The earthquake’s epicenter was situated near the coordinates Latitude: 12.16N, Longitude: 61.83W, which places it approximately 15 km northwest of St. George’s, Grenada. Nearby cities that may have felt the tremors include Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, about 129 km southwest of the epicenter, and Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago, roughly 162 km northwest.

At a depth of 10 km, this earthquake is considered shallow. Shallow earthquakes can be more widely felt compared to deeper ones, but they typically cause less damage due to their distance from the Earth’s surface.

The UWI-SRC encourages anyone who felt the earthquake to provide feedback via their website: https://uwiseismic.com/connect/earthquake-feedback/. This information helps the organization better understand the event and its effects on local communities.

Earthquakes are common in the Caribbean region due to its complex tectonic setting, which involves the interaction of multiple tectonic plates. While most earthquakes in the region are relatively minor, they serve as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and awareness for seismic events.

Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available.
