Rare tropical storm Akara forms in South Atlantic off Brazil

A tropical disturbance off the coast of southeastern Brazil has strengthened from a tropical depression to Tropical Storm Akara. 

The formation of the storm in the South Atlantic Ocean has been described by weather experts as unusual.  

According to a CIMSS Satellite Blog, Tropical Storms in the South Atlantic are rare, with the last being Tropical Storm Iba in 2019.  

Tropical Storm Akara currently poses no threat to land and is expected to remain offshore.  

According to the latest update from The Brazilian Navy Hydrographic Center’s Serviço Meteorológico Marinho (BNHC/SMM) issued on Febraury 20, Tropical storm “Akará” was located at 30s 041w with central pressure 994, moving to the south with estimated maximum winds 9 on southwest sector.
