Guyana: Two Dead in Boat Mishap Involving Coast Guard and Civilian Craft

The Guyana Defence Force confirmed reports on Friday morning of a collision between a Coast Guard vessel and a civilian boat in the Moruca River, Region One (Barima Waini), which claimed two lives.

According to preliminary findings, the Coast Guard Raiders Craft 17 (RC 17) collided with the civilian vessel around 06:45 hours.

The private vessel was occupied by three adults and a baby, while the RC 17 had Coast Guard officials.

Unfortunately, both the vessel operator and the baby’s mother suffered serious injuries. The Charity Hospital transported them and declared them deceased.

The Coast Guard troops on the RC 17 have reported no injuries.The Guyana Police Force has opened an investigation into the event.

The Guyana Police Force also issued a statement regarding the incident. While neither the GDF nor the GPF identified the deceased, the News Room believes the guy is Adrian Thomas, a resident of Kumaka Road in Santa Rosa Village. The second victim of the Moruca River boat accident was Helen Rebai of Waikrebi Village on the Barama River.

“The Coast Guard vessel was at the time en route to Santa Rosa but collided with a civilian boat with four (4) occupants while negotiating a turn,” the Coast Guard stated in a statement.

The Coast Guard vessel was damaged and is now at the base on the Pomeroon River.
