CIA director makes unannounced brief visit to Guyana

On Thursday, March 21, 2024, the President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, received a courtesy visit from the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States of America, William J. Burns.

Burns was accompanied by the US Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, as stated in a release from the Office of the President. Burns’ visit is the latest in a series of high-profile visits by US officials, which analysts interpret as a warning to Venezuela to desist from its aggression against Guyana.

Attending the meeting were Prime Minister Mark Phillips, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall, Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn, Chief of Defence Staff (GDF) Brigadier Omar Khan, Police Commissioner (acting) Clifton Hicken, and Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) James Singh.

Burns is likely the first head of the CIA ever to visit Guyana.
