664Connect Media is all about raising the profile of Montserrat, its people and also its local businesses. With that in mind, today we are launching our ‘Meet the CEO’ series, which will allow us to introduce you to some of the people behind the local businesses that you know and love.
In our first Meet The CEO interview, we chat to Kate Shillingford, an entrepreneur, tutor and the founder of Kate Shillingford’s Private Tutoring, about how she got into tutoring and what she has in store for local children at her first annual Summer Camp.
Hi Kate! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Are you from Montserrat originally?
“I am originally from Dominica. I moved to Montserrat in 2017.”
Do you have a teaching background? How did you get into tutoring?
“I have never been a school teacher. I have been tutoring from when I was in college. From then I always tutored but it was more of a hobby, something I just liked to do.
When did you decide to take it to the next level and start Kate Shillingford’s Private tutoring?
“Last year in June, I left my job as a teller at RBC Royal Bank here in Montserrat. First I tried applying for jobs on the island, but that was a drawn out process with no results. So, one day I just woke up and decided to start doing something for myself. That was last October 2020.’
What age ranges do you cater to?
“I’ll work with any age really. Once it’s within my capabilities.”
What subjects do you cover?
“At primary school level, I deal with all subjects. High school I’ll do subjects that I would have done for CXC. At college I only do Biology, Physics and Mathematics because those were my majors.”

You had a successful Christmas Camp in December. What was that experience like for you?
“I was trying my best to make sure the children were enjoying the Christmas season. And I was happy everyday because they were happy too. It was such a unique experience being with them everyday having fun, it didn’t even feel like I was working.”
What can parents expect from your Summer camp? Have you taken things up a notch?
“This Summer camp is going to be everything a child expects Summer to be. I have planned the camp based on the memories I want the children to have. I’ve definitely taken the camp to the next level. I raised the fun level.
They will get the chance to do fun activities while learning about themselves and their surroundings. We are going to be chefs, sports athletes, explorers, farmers and fishermen this year. We will also be hiking some of the wonderful trails in Montserrat. ”
What age range are you catering to?
“Ages 6 -12.”
